maxant Steganography
What is steganography?
For a definition of steganography
I will quote Bryan Clair
since he has defined it very elegantly:
 |
Steganography is the dark cousin of cryptography, the use of codes. While cryptography provides privacy,
steganography is intended to provide secrecy. Privacy is what you need when you use your credit card
on the Internet -- you don't want your number revealed to the public. For this,
you use cryptography, and send a coded pile of gibberish that only the web site can decipher. Though your
code may be unbreakable, any hacker can look and see you've sent a message. For true secrecy, you
don't want anyone to know you're sending a message at all.
|
|
To achieve this secrecy, the process of steganography
hides data within an image, sound file, movie, for example, so
that its existence is hidden from prying eyes.
Consider the following image, known as the "output":
It actually consists of a hidden image, within an original image:
 |
 |
| The "hidden" image |
The "original" image |
If you don't believe it, right click on the "output" image and choose to save it locally on your PC
(or try right clicking here and choosing to save).
Then go here to decrypt it. The pass phrase you need is "passphrase",
without the surrounding quotes.
Here is a more impressive result. Here is the "output":
It actually consists of a hidden PDF document:
Again, if you don't believe it, right click on the "output" image and choose to save it locally on your PC
(or try right clicking here and choosing to save).
Then go here to decrypt it. The pass phrase you need is "passphrase",
without the surrounding quotes.
Why use maxant?
Steganography is nothing new and there are plenty of articles about it and free tools for it on the internet.
The following
provide examples of steganography, although not as fine as what can be produced on this website, for example
in the above images.
-
This article shows
images
of a bear. Compare the two and you can see that around the bears nose, there are significant changes that
perhaps make the output image susceptible to detection.
-
This article shows
a technique where the decoded hidden image is no longer the same as the original which works only if the
decoded hidden image is then still readable to human eyes. There is a limit on what can be hidden and
retrieved. A voice recording for example could not feasibly be hidden.
The results of encrypting using the maxant website are:
- very hidden/undetectable data
- encrypted data within the output that has been encrypted to at least
DES
standard meaning that even if it is discovered, it cannot be decrypted and read,
unless you have the pass phrase used upon encryption.
So, start using our technology now!
